Iolanta is Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s lightest opera. It is the fairytale of a blind girl who is healed by the power of love. Iolanta belongs to the genre of lyric musical drama. It was composed from July to September 1891 and was the composer’s last opera. “I’ll write such an opera that everyone will cry their eyes out”, Tchaikovsky said. And he succeeded, even though the audience’s tears come from happiness and joy for the characters.
The opera was based on Henrik Hertz’s poetic drama King René's Daughter, translated by Fyodor Miller and later adapted by Vladimir Zotov.
The composer’s brother Modest Tchaikovsky revised the plot for the libretto. After the success of The Queen of Spades, he became an acclaimed librettist. However, it is most likely that the concept of Iolanta is, first and foremost, an expression of the composer’s own moral and philosophical aspirations. The librettist only embodied Tchaikovsky’s intentions. The final chorus, glorifying creation, the light of reason, morality and purity, is the true expression of the idea of the opera.
For the students of the International Opera Academy “ASTANA OPERA”, the concert performance of Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta is already the second stage incarnation of the masterpieces of opera classics, the first being Mozart’s Don Giovanni.
