Two centuries ago, during the Christmas season, the Teatro Valle in Rome commissioned Gioachino Rossini an opera, which he wrote in just twenty four days. La Cenerentola, ossia La bontà in trionfo (Cinderella, or Goodness Triumphant) became one of Gioacchino Rossini’s finest operas.

La Cenerentola premiered in Rome on 25 January 1817, and quickly became one of the most performed operas written by the great composer. Gioachino Rossini and librettist Jacopo Ferretti turned Charles Perrault’s well-known fairy tale about the poor girl who met the Prince into a comic opera, having completed it with new characters, unexpected plot twists, sparkling humour and surprises. From the first notes, the opera captivates audiences with its extraordinary beauty, wit and fun, and, of course, magic. In the opera, Rossini jokes about human weaknesses and makes the main characters look funny in various comic situations.

La Cenerentola has been gracing the repertoire of the best opera houses worldwide for 200 years. To celebrate the opera’s bicentenary, Rossini’s masterpiece was presented for the first time in Kazakhstan at the Abai State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre.
