ASTANA OPERA PRESENTS

Double-Reed Festival

First Concert

THE CONCERT IS HELD IN KAZAKH AND RUSSIAN

The Astana Opera House presents to classical music lovers the first of two concerts within the Double-Reed Festival.

Woodwind instruments with a double-reed (sound-producing device consisting of the two blades of a special kind of reed) are the oboe, the English horn, the bassoon and the contrabassoon.

Due to the very active playing, the reed lasts for just a couple of performances, so the pressure on the musicians with a double-reed is great and their place in the orchestra is especially honourable. For example, the entire symphony orchestra relies on the oboe’s A note for tuning, given that the oboe is deemed the least susceptible to detuning.

The concerts were initiated by concertmasters Honoured Worker of Kazakhstan Damilya Makhpirova (oboe) and Asset Neldybayev (bassoon).

The programme will feature some of the most virtuosic and popular pieces, as well as rarely performed musical compositions specifically written for double-reed instruments. Among them are well-known melodies from the television show Wait for Me and films such as The Mission and Harry Potter.

Traditionally, during the interval, maestro Abzal Mukhitdin invites the audience to a coffee break.
