20th Century Strings:
Benediktovich Kogan
(To the 100th anniversary of the birth)

The evening dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the violinist, musician and teacher,
Honoured Artist of Kazakhstan Professor Joseph Benediktovich Kogan will be held in
the Chamber Hall of the Astana Opera House.
Joseph Benediktovich, one of the founders of the violin performing art of Kazakhstan,
devoted thirty years to teaching at the conservatory.
The Kogan family arrived in Almaty in 1942 for evacuation, but when the war ended,
they did not return to their native Chisinau. Wonderful musicians – brothers Joseph and
Semyon, sister Eva – made a huge contribution to the development of Kazakhstan’s
culture.
Vast performing experience, high musical culture, deep knowledge of the world violin
repertoire – all this allowed Joseph Kogan to achieve serious success in training
professional musicians-performers and teachers. For 25 years of work, Joseph
Benediktovich had brought up more than a hundred excellent instructors-performers who
have worked and still work today at the Kurmangazy Kazakh National Conservatory, the
Kyrgyz State University of Arts, the Leningrad (and now St. Petersburg) Conservatory,
music colleges and schools, symphony orchestras and opera houses in different countries.
He performed concerts for violin with an orchestra of classical composers. Joseph Kogan
was the first performer and editor of almost all violin and chamber works by Kazakhstani
composers – M. Tulebayev, Ye. Brusilovsky, A. Zhubanov, T. Mukhamedzhanov, G.
Zhubanova, B. Baikadamov, etc. His concert transcriptions for violin and piano of kyuis
by Kurmangazy, Dauletkerei, Baiserke and others were very well received.
The maestro, together with his brother, the pianist Semyon Kogan, masterly performed
the kyuis of Kazakh composers on the violin.
The concert programme features works by J. Kogan, S. Prokofiev, D. Shostakovich, A.
Schnittke, Ye. Brusilovsky, Kurmangazy's kyui arranged by J. Kogan, etc.
Kazakhstani musicians, young violinists, continuing the work of the great teacher, are
taking part in our concert today.
