A poem by the 12th-century Persian classical poet Nizami, which lies at the heart of the libretto of the opera, was included in the 18th century European collections of Persian fairy tales, from where the Italian playwright Carlo Gozzi took it for his “fairy tale for the theatre”. Libretto by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni.

The plot is intriguing: Princess Turandot, a fatal beauty, makes her suitors to solve three riddles. The prettiest of women’s hand in marriage is promised to the one who happens to find the right answers, any wrong answer results in immediate death. Prince Calaf decides to win Turandot’s heart at any cost...

The intrigue will be revealed by the director Davide Livermore, who has forged his outstanding 22 year career both on the main stages of Europe and at smaller theatres in his native country Italy, during which time he has been stage director, stage designer, costume and lighting designer, singer, dancer, actor, scriptwriter and teacher. He has worked together with artists such as Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, José Carreras, Mirella Freni, and with many renowned directors including Luca Ronconi, Andrei Tarkovsky and Zhang Yimou, as well as with the world star maestro Zubin Mehta.
