THE CONCERT IS HELD IN KAZAKH AND RUSSIAN LANGUAGES
The Astana Opera Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Honoured Worker of Kazakhstan Aidar Abzhakhanov, presents a concert featuring works by 20th-century European classical composers: Igor Stravinsky, Claude Debussy and Leonard Bernstein.
The programme features suites from the ballet Petrushka, the musical West Side Story, and the symphonic poem Afternoon of a Faun.
Stravinsky’s puppet drama Petrushka, set against the lively backdrop of Russian Shrovetide festivities, merges motifs from Russian folk songs, urban folk music and melodies in a traditional style composed by Stravinsky. The grotesque melodies and folk-dance rhythms of Petrushka will transition into the languid impressionism of Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and Bernstein’s multilayered West Side Story, where classical elements intertwine with jazz and traditional Latin American rhythms. Together, these works form a dazzling symphonic fireworks display of masterpieces that have become iconic.

I. Stravinsky: Suite from the ballet Petrushka (1947 version)
C. Debussy: Symphonic Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun
