The first Kazakh opera Kyz Zhibek created 83 years ago was immediately recognized as a gem of the national musical art. The renowned playwright and writer Gabit Musrepov wrote the libretto, based on the eponymous folk lyric and epic poem about the tragic love of Zhibek and Tulegen. The music was written by composer Yevgeny Brusilovsky, who actively used Kazakh folk songs and kyuis, as well as works by folk composers such as Ybrai, Mukhit, Zhayau Mussa and Tattimbet, and boldly adopted the European art of instrumentation and harmony to the Kazakh music.

The premiere of the opera took place in 1934 at the Kazakh Musical Theatre (now, the Abai State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre). In May 1936, the opera Kyz Zhibek created a sensation when being performed as part of the First Decade of Arts and Literature in Moscow.

The lead roles at different times were graced by People’s Artists of the USSR K.Baiseitova, R.Jamanova, B.Tulegenova, People’s Artist of the Kazakh SSR – K.Baiseitov, M.Yerzhanov, Garifolla Kurmangaliyev, People’s Artist of the Republic of Kazakhstan N.Ussenbayeva and others.
