GALA BALLET

(In memory of the Tursynbek Nurkaliyev)

 

The Gala Ballet will take place in the Main Hall on 8 February. The extensive programme features pas de deux from classical ballets (Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty, Minkus’ Don Quixote), duets, scenes and dances from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, Khachaturian's Spartacus, Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, Asafyev’s The Fountain of Bakhchisarai; choreographic miniatures such as The Dying Swan by Mikhail Fokine to music by Camille Saint-Saëns, Melody choreographed by Asaf Messerer to music by Christoph Gluck and concert numbers staged by Tursynbek Nurkaliyev (Pavane by Gabriel Fauré, The Road to music by Dmitri Shostakovich) and Galiya Buribayeva (One Story by E. Hagerty).

 

Tursynbek Nurkaliyev (1950–2022) – Honoured Worker of Kazakhstan, Recipient of the Order of Kurmet, member of the International Association of Choreographers, member of the International Federation of Ballet Competitions.

He graduated from the Almaty State Ballet School and the T. Zhurgenov Kazakh National Academy of Arts with a major in direction and choreography (Department of the People’s Artist of the Kazakh SSR, Professor Z. Raibayev).

From 1970 to 2000, he was a soloist at the Abai State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre.

From 2000 to 2013, he was the chief choreographer of the K. Baiseitova National Opera and Ballet Theatre.

From 2013 to 2015, he was the artistic director of the Ballet Company at the State Opera and Ballet Theatre “Astana Opera”.

From 2015 to 2022, he was the Director of the Ballet Company.

He staged such ballets as Asafyev’s The Fountain of Bakhchisarai, Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker and Swan Lake, Minkus’ La Bayadère, Adam’s Giselle and others.

He represented Kazakhstan on the most prestigious ballet stages in New York, Moscow, Varna, Rome, Beijing, Seoul, Budapest, Istanbul, Sochi, Krasnoyarsk, and Ulaanbaatar; as well as chaired ballet competitions in Astana and Almaty.

Tursynbek Nurkaliyev collaborated with such famous contemporary choreographers as People’s Artist of the USSR Yuri Grigorovich, Honoured Artist of Russia Sergei Vikharev, People’s Artist of Bashkortostan Shamil Teregulov, Director of the Roman Academy of Dance Margherita Parrilla, People’s Artist of Russia Boris Eifman, Charles Jude (France) and others.
