The zoo lives in its own, slow rhythm, there is no city bustle, it is filled with a special natural atmosphere. At any time of year, you can visit the Almaty Zoo and see the brightest representatives of the savannah and the cold north. Meet the animals listed in the red book and enjoy the peaceful swimming of fish in the aquarium pavilion.

Not a little delight in the children cause the inhabitants of the terrarium, such as mesh and tiger pythons, chameleons, rattlesnakes and turtles (which, there are about 11 species).

Almaty Zoo is a place with almost a century of history!

November 7, 1937, timed to the anniversary of the Great October Revolution, Almaty Zoo was opened. This event was preceded by two-year work on the selection and arrangement of the place, which was headed by Murzakhan Tolebaev. Being an excellent connoisseur of the Seven Rivers and an experienced hunter, he personally went to different regions of Kazakhstan to catch wild animals. But they were not enough to surprise the public. Therefore, Tolebayev agreed to purchase exotic animals from Moscow, Ashgabat and Leningrad Zoo. Thanks to this, the Alma-Ata Zoo has been replenished with such animals as buffalo, nilgau antelope, bison, and emus. Jackals, hyenas, foxes, and Karakals also appeared, and polar bears, raccoons, and reindeer were brought from the northern expanses, and by the time it was discovered it was fully staffed. The first two days of the zoo worked in the introductory model and received guests free of charge.

During the whole period of its activity, Almaty Zoo experienced different periods and one of the most difficult, as well as for the whole country, for it was the period of the Great Patriotic War. The majority of the employees were called up to the front, there was not enough food and animals were killed, but the remaining workers saved many species.

The first major changes took place in the zoo in the 1960s. New pavilions were built and for the first time elephants appeared in Almaty Zoo.

Animals of the zoo

To date, 345 species of animals are represented in the park. All of them are located in seven sections: ungulates, predatory mammals, primates, birds of prey and exotic birds, an aquarium and an exotarium. The most popular aquarium is the Marine Aquarium, which is inhabited by representatives of aquatic fauna from almost all corners of our planet.

Located at the foot of Kok-Tobe, it stretches over 21 hectares and is located near the Gorky Park. The main entrance is located on Esenberlin Street. Throughout the zoo, there is a reliable security system, which protects visitors from attacks by predatory animals. Its serviceability and integrity are under constant control of the staff.

Almaty Zoo is a member of the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the World and European Association of Zoos and Aquariums and is actively involved in scientific activities.

Today, Almaty Zoo needs not only visitors but also volunteers. Anyone can help with animal care or become the guardian of one of them.

Recently, a contact zoo was created for the youngest visitors.
