“Spring Waters”

(Dedicated to the 145th anniversary of the birth of Sergei Rachmaninoff)

The “Spring Waters” concert, dedicated to the 145th anniversary of the birth of the acclaimed Russian composer, pianist and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff, will take place in the Chamber Hall of the Astana Opera House.

Sergei Rachmaninoff is a representative of musical symbolism, who brought together the principles of the Petersburg and Moscow composition schools in his creative work.

His musical heritage is so widely known that the composer’s works can be heard in many Soviet and Western films of the 20th century, including Rhapsody (USA, 1954), Spring on Zarechnaya Street (1956), The Elder Son (1976), Poem of Wings (1979), Non-Urgent Spring (1989), Ruth (1989), The Branch of Lilac (2007) and others.

The composer’s romances compete for popularity with his piano works. Most of them are written on the basis of verses by Russian poets of the turn of the 19th and the 20th centuries (A.Pushkin, A.Koltsov, A.Fet, A.Tolstoy, F.Tyutchev, A.Blok, S.Nadson, etc.). Rachmaninoff’s vocal creative work is characterized by emotional openness, sincerity and immediacy of expression. Like Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff aspired, first of all, to capture the basic mood of the poetic text in a vivid melodic image. The composer’s careful and attentive attitude toward a word is quite at the level of his time - the era of high and refined poetic culture. Exceptional richness, colorfulness and variety of forms are the distinctive features of piano accompaniment for Rachmaninoff’s romances.

The “Spring Waters” concert will feature the composer’s romances, as well as the Trio élégiaque, which will be performed by opera singers and well-known Kazakhstani musicians-instrumentalists.
