Bachianas Brasileiras
Concert from “Across Countries and Continents” Series
“BACHIANAS BRASILEIRAS”
Dedicated to the 130th anniversary of the composer H.Villa-Lobos’s birth (1887-1959)
On 2 March 2017, the concert “Bachianas Brasileiras” will take place. The concert will feature works by the Brazilian classical composer Heitor Villa-Lobos.
One of the most well-known Latin American composers, Villa-Lobos became famous for the synthesis of stylistic peculiarities of Brazilian folk music and European classical tradition. His creative work includes more than a thousand pieces in various genres (9 operas, 15 ballets, 12 symphonies, 10 instrumental concertos, more than 60 chamber works, lyrics, romantic songs, choral compositions and individual instrument parts, etc.).
Villa-Lobos felt a deep reverence for Bach’s creative work and brought to life the famous Bachianas Brasileiras (1930-1945), nine suites for various combinations of instruments. Villa-Lobos cultivated two national music genres: seresta (a type of traditional song) and choro (fusion of Brazilian, Indian and popular music elements).
According to the renowned Spanish cellist Pablo Casals, Villa-Lobos will remain one of the greatest figures of contemporary music and the greatest pride of the country that gave birth to him.
Composer’s works gained wide popularity in Brazil and abroad during his lifetime.
