AKKULAR SAZY

Raushan Orazbayeva is a kobyz player, kuishi-baksy, Honoured Worker of Kazakhstan, recipient of the Umai Award (2023), soloist of the Khalyk Kazynasy Centre and the State Academic Concert Organisation “Qazaqconcert” named after Roza Baglanova, associate professor at the Kazakh National University of Arts.

This evening, 24 kuis dedicated to the theme of the Swan, the image of which can be found in many legends that have survived since ancient times, will be performed in one breath. In the folklore tradition, kuis were played continuously for over an hour – this is how shamans, playing the kobyz, healed people from serious illnesses, purified them from evil forces, and protected them from evil spirits. The thing is, the sound of the kobyz, resonating stronger and stronger, merging with nature, shaking the earth and the sky, reaching the cosmos, and transforming into beautiful melodies, brings the relaxed person back to a normal state.

“There are sounds of the universe in the kobyz,” said the art scholar Omar Kaimoldin.

In 2018, the Oner Publishing House in Almaty released a collection of 26 kuis for kobyz and dombra titled Akkular Sazy as a teaching aid. The sound recording of kuis was made at the Mosfilm studio (Russia) and in Erlangen (Germany, 2017).

Since 1991, Raushan Orazbayeva, a master kobyz player and kuishi, has been popularising this sacred ancient art in Kazakhstan, CIS countries and abroad.
