Petite Messe Solennelle

“Petite Messe Solennelle” (“Little Solemn Mass”) crowns the oeuvre of one of the greatest European opera composers and the author of more than 40 operas – Gioacchino Rossini.

He composed the mass during his retirement from operatic career. “Petite Messe Solennelle” is a musical conclusion and contemplation of the composer’s eventful life.

The mass got its name because of quite austere original accompaniment: piano and pump organ or harmonium (an instrument similar to physharmonica). Such accompaniment was deliberately chosen by Rossini to avoid his operatic style which the orchestra would have highlighted. “Petite Messe Solennelle” is a bright and pure composition. The classical music lovers will enjoy the unique combination of delightful operatic melodies and exquisite counterpoint of the choral parts.
