Autumn Elegy

Bel Canto Music Salon

“Autumn Elegy”

The season poets loved and sang of in their poems as a golden autumn, is akin to the lyrical music genre called elegy. Elegy is a lyrical song-reflection with a shade of sweet sorrow. In the autumn, we regret for the bygone summer and reminisce about happy meetings and tender partings left there.

Many poetic elegies have been turned into beautiful romances: Do not tempt me needlessly… by Ye.Baratynsky and M. Glinka, For the Shores of Your Distant Homeland… by A.Pushkin and A.Borodin and many others. The instrumental elegy became widespread, particularly in Russian composers’ works, from the middle of the nineteenth century. However, J. Massenet’s Élégie was, perhaps, the most popular among music lovers.

The evening programme will feature arias and duets from operas, vocal, instrumental and poetic works, elegiac in character. Opera soloists and musicians-instrumentalists will perform beautiful music by J. Massenet, P. Tchaikovsky, S. Rachmaninoff and other composers.
