An Evening of Cello Music

German Classical Music

The “German Classical Music” chamber concert will feature cello sonatas by German classical composers (Beethoven and Brahms), performed by the renowned Kazakhstani musician, laureate of the Foundation of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the field of culture and art and winner of international competitions Yermek Kurmanayev and pianist Anara Kamelinova.

Beethoven and Brahms’s works are the greatest phenomena of world culture. Their compositions are the quintessence of all the most beautiful things that have been created in the art of music.

Beethoven wrote two Sonatas op.5 in 1796 when he was young (aged 26) and left Vienna to take a big trip. Beethoven devoted two Cello Sonatas op.5 to the King and performed them at court in ensemble with Jean–Louis Duport, the younger brother of the Master of the King’s Music Jean-Pierre Duport. In response, the monarch presented the composer with a golden snuff box, filled with Louis d’ors, just like they gave such presents to the ambassadors.

Brahms’s Sonatas serve as a living testimony to his inexhaustible creative imagination - each of them is unique and individual.

One of the perfect samples of cello sonata was Cello Sonata No. 2 in F major, Op. 99. Robert Hausmann, a famous cellist of that time, commissioned the piece. The cellist’s wish came true in the summer of 1886, when the composer spent his time by Lake Thun in Switzerland. The Sonata was performed in the Small Hall of the Viennese Music Association.

The piece took its rightful place in the repertoire of many celebrated cellists, who among others included Pablo Casals, Pierre Fournier and Yo-Yo Ma.
