G. Mahler. Symphony No.2

Gustav Mahler (1860-1911)

Symphony No.2

for soprano, alto, mixed chorus and orchestra

The Symphony No.2 became an important milestone in the creative biography of Mahler. It was composed during six years (1888-1894) and became his first choral symphony. Like Beethoven, he needed words to fully develop his thought, and the verses from Friedrich Klopstock’s ode (“You will rise again, my dust, after a short sleep”) served as these words. It is in the Christian idea of resurrection that he found the answer to the main question of the Symphony.

A large number of performers and the length of the symphony (it lasts more than an hour) did not prevent it from becoming one of the most popular works of Mahler - there exists numerous interpretations by different conductors.

At the Astana Opera House, the Symphony by the Austrian composer will be performed in the interpretation by the renowned conductor, Honoured Worker of Kazakhstan Alan Buribayev.
