Il barbiere di Siviglia by Gioachino Rossini is an indispensable hit in the repertoire of the world's major opera houses. A comic plot, bright images and melodies, identifiable from the first few notes, made this opera one of the most popular among the audience and performers.

The premiere of the opera took place on February 12, 1816, in Rome. Several operas based on Beaumarchais's play were written by other composers, and no one expected such a bright musical event in Italy. However, it was Rossini's opera that was a staggering success. The audience organized a triumphal torchlight procession to the composer's house. Today, Rossini's masterpiece remains one of the most performed operas in the world’s repertoire.

People's Artist of the USSR Yermek Serkebayev, who was recognized as the best Figaro of the Soviet Union, is one of the first and brightest performers of the lead role in this opera.
