ROMEO AND JULIET

Sergei Prokofiev

ROMEO AND JULIET

Ballet in 2 acts

Choreography by Charles Jude (France)

Conductor: Giuseppe Acquaviva (Italy)

The tragedy Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare (1564-1616) about the tragic death of the lovers belonging to rival noble families, which inspired many musicians from Berlioz and Gounod to Tchaikovsky, was written in 1595. The idea to create a ballet came to Prokofiev soon after his coming back from abroad in 1993. The theme was advised by the famous Shakespearian scholar of that time – the artistic director of the Leningrad Opera and Ballet Theatre named after Kirov (presently Mariinsky) S.E. Radlov (1892-1958).

The premiere of Romeo and Juliet was held on 30 December 1938 in Brno, a Czech city, choreographed by Ivo Psota. In 1946, the new revised and expanded ballet in the edition by Lavrovsky was performed at the Bolshoi Theatre (Moscow). In 1955 Mosfilm released a short film version of the ballet. Other choreographers such as John Cranko (1962), Kenneth MacMillan (1965) and Rudolf Nureyev (1972) over the time created new productions of the ballet. Yury Grigorovich first presented the ballet on the stage of the Paris Opera in 1978.
