The Sleeping Beauty is a true masterpiece by P. Tchaikovsky. It impresses the audience with the strength of the emotional impact, artistic discoveries and variety of colors. Magnificent music pattern of the ballet is woven of two contrasting themes – the Lilac Fairy and the Fairy Carabosse as a confrontation between Good and Evil.

Pyotr Tchaikovsky worked on the Sleeping Beauty in constant collaboration with the choreographer Marius Petipa. A wonderful performance, where music and choreography perfectly combine, became the result of the creative tandem of two geniuses. The premiere performance took place at the Mariinsky Theatre on 3 January 1890. Since then, the Sleeping Beauty has been produced on many stages around the world, and, significantly, the basis is always Petipa’s brilliant choreography, although each choreographer tries to introduce something personal.

The outstanding contemporary choreographer Yuri Grigorovich presented The Sleeping Beauty ballet on the stage of the Astana Opera House not as a fairy tale or entertainment extravaganza as other choreographers often do, but as a kind of spiritual poem corresponding to Tchaikovsky’s music.
