BETWEEN TWO AGES (the 19th and 20th centuries)

On 8 February 2017, the piano and chamber-instrumental music concert “Between two ages” (the 19th and 20th centuries) will take place.

Changing of centuries is by no means a calendar phenomenon: the main border between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is found, in fact, along the firing line of the First World War. The music of the life-changing time has lost its former integrity - it began to speak about different things in different languages.

The concert programme will feature A.Scriabin’s piano works, created in the last years of the 19th century, and E.Elgar’s Violin Sonata, written in the second decade of the 20th century. Despite three decades, which separate them, they are definitely connected by the romantic tradition of the 19th century.

S.Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata No.3, a daring voice of the 20th century, written a year earlier the belated “romantic” Sonata by Elgar, will be also performed.

Listeners will also enjoy C.Debussy’s Rhapsodie for Clarinet and Piano. Having met at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, both ages - leaving and coming - will hold a conversation in a fanciful way in this 1910 work.
