The plot was based on a romantic love story between the Russian traveler Nikolai Rezanov and the daughter of the Governor of San Francisco Maria Conchita Arguello de la Concepcion.

She appeared in 1806 off the coast of California on two sailboats - «Juno» and «Avos», an expedition led by the famous Russian traveler Nikolai Rezanov. At the governor’s reception, he meets sixteen-year-old Conchita. But the girl has a bridegroom, a duel begins, and Rezanov is forced to leave, not having obtained permission to marry a Catholic.
